Podcasts are the new trend in entertainment. Check out some of the top-rated picks and some of our favorites.
The modern version of a book-on-tape: podcasts, the newest entertainment trend sweeping across the nation. From staying updated on the most recent trends and news alerts to inspiring stories and seminars, podcasts are a great way to stay entertained and informed for listeners of all ages. Check out some of our favorites below!
Serial: As what can only be considered one of the most popular cult-favorite podcasts of all time, Serial follows the story of Adnan Syed- a young man who was accused of murdering his ex-high school sweetheart- who is interviewed by journalist Sarah Koeig. This murder mystery/documentary is filled with exciting plot twists and open-ended theories that may even have the listener sympathize with the young antagonist. With a recent second season filled with new breaks in the case, listeners are sure to be hooked in no time. Did we mention Serial is based on a true story?
Modern Love: Once a popular column in the New York Times and currently one of my mother’s personal favorites, Modern Love is a series of short love stories. It’s a little bit like the Chicken Soup for the Soul series, but with a focus on love, loss, and redemption. From romantic love to the love between family members, each episode will leave you feeling a bit uplifted, all in a mere 20 minutes. What’s more, every episode is completely different and voiced by popular personalities or celebrities, from Uma Thurman to rising star Greta Gerwig. As the podcast promises, you’ll fall in love at first listen.
TED Talks: Over the summer, I had an internship in Philadelphia, and I took a 40-minute train ride into the city every morning. One way that I passed the time during my commute was listening to TED Talks on my podcast app. One of the best parts of TED talks is that there are so many different topics, so any listener can find something that interests them. Whether you want an emotionally-charged motivational speech or simply want to learn something new, TED Talks are a great way to pass the time wherever you are. One of our favorites is by Brene Brown, research professor at the University of Houston Graduate College of Social Work: The Power of Vulnerability.
Sword and Scale: Another thriller podcast, Sword and Scale promises to keep you on the edge of your seat for the duration of each episode. The podcast talks about some of the most horrifying and gruesome crimes, including some that have never been solved. Sword and Scale digs deeper than the headlines so that listeners can feel fully immersed in the plot.
