With fall in full swing, summer vacations and days of ease are well behind us. Now is the time we all buckle up and focus on our work and productivity.
Finding time to relax can be difficult enough, but finding time to feel mentally sane, too? Forget about it. That’s just too much.
Well, maybe not. Relaxing in a way that also stimulates your brain may not only save you time, but may also make you feel refreshed and closer to the things that matter most to you. Why not kill two birds with one stone?
Recently, I’ve been getting really into yoga. My stepmom used to be a yoga instructor and after years of her inviting me along to her classes, I finally caved. And boy, am I glad I did. Not only have I found a new hobby that interests me, I’m also exercising, meditating, and spending time with my family all at the same time.
Yoga might not be your cup of tea, but there are plenty of activities out there that you can try so that you can get your fill in more than just on aspect of your life. As overwhelming as the autumn season can be, be careful not to neglect yourself.
As mentioned, yoga is a practice that I’ve been blossoming into. While I first was drawn to it as a form of exercise, I keep going back because it brings me peace and keeps me grounded.
In fact, it’s not so uncommon for people to change their intention for doing yoga. According to the Huffington Post, “Two-thirds of yoga students and 85 percent of yoga teachers have a change of heart regarding why they do yoga — most often changing to spirituality or self-actualization, a sense of fulfilling their potential.”
You walk away from the yoga mat feeling strengthened, lengthened, refreshed, present, and spiritually full. If you’re craving some of those feelings in your everyday life, then yoga may be the best thing for you.
Self-expression is so important. Sometimes we bottle up our emotions or we fail to be the most effective communicators. But at the very least, we should learn to be honest and open with ourselves.
How are you feeling today? What’s bringing you joy? What’s upsetting you? How are you coping? What are your goals?
Being in touch with your emotions and transferring them onto paper makes your thoughts even more real and valid. This process can also be liberating as you free your thoughts and write them down externally.
If you’re like me, you’ll grab the old-fashioned pen and paper and get to writing. But if blogging, tweeting, or other writing sources are more your style, do your thing.
Taking New Classes
What have you always wanted to do or had an interest in? Think about it for a minute. Ponder why you’ve never taken that next step to follow through.
Challenge that voice in your head that is giving you hesitation. Take a class on the topic or activity and learn from the experts. Whether it’s cooking, sculpting, or reading classical literature, taking a class will push the boundaries of your mind and comfort zone.
You may just find that you learned a lot about yourself through the experience.
