We like to think that gratitude is embedded into our everyday lives. Yet, sometimes, being grateful can get lost in the mix as we go from task to task, destination to destination.

During the holiday season, being thankful is emphasized more so than during other times of the year. We walk around with the belief that we are grateful, but do we verbalize our gratitude and name each and every blessing in our lives?

We have so much to be grateful for – family, moments, places, lessons. Let’s not let these things go unnoticed. Although this time of year we recognize that we are, in general, grateful people, why don’t we specify and turn our thoughts into words and reality? Physically creating a personalized list of all you’re grateful for is an overwhelming and humbling experience that I encourage you to partake in this holiday season, as well as all year long!

Positive Vibes

Writing a gratitude list allows you to collect all the positives in your life and have them be seen right in front of you. Your focus is taken away from any complaints or problems you may be facing, and you shift into recognizing the present. You reflect on what you currently have, rather than what you don’t. This type of mentality benefits both your mind and body. According to happify, fostering these positive feelings also allows for an increase in your happiness and self-esteem.

Sense of Control

Your list is yours. You are in the driver’s seat. This idea in and of itself has more power than you think. You can control what you write, when you write, and where you write. This practice is simple, yet powerful. You are expressing personal thoughts without the interference of others, and you’re doing it to become a better person.

Appreciation of Life

Creating a gratitude list increases your appreciation for life. It encourages you to have faith in yourself that you can accomplish what you set your mind to, as mentioned by RemedyGrove. A gratitude list makes you grateful for life itself, and inspires you to make the most of it by taking care of yourself and increasing your overall quality of life.
